JOHN POTTER was born Oct 6, 1781 in Va. John was married possibly 2 times. The reason this is thought is in his will he lists all his children but in the will of his wife she only mentions the younger children. With this assumption I will list the child that were probably by the first wife:
- Stephen S. (see below)
John would have married 2nd Temperance Ferguson who was born abt 1785 in Va. Her father was Eli. Children of John & Temperance were:
- Sarah b abt 1806; M abt 1826 Callaway Co., Mo.; M Hiram Harvey

John lived in Giles Co., Tn from abt 1806-1816. He is found on the 1812 Giles Co., Tax List. He was appointed Constable in 1819 for Cooper Co. (later Hickory & Benton Cos.). John's will was written Oct. 12, 1847 and probated Mar 30, 1848 in Benton Co., Mo. The inventory was Apr 8, 1848; appraisal apr 6, 1848; & sale May 1, 1848. John died Mar 14, 1848 & was buried in Gabriel Cemetery in Benton Co. Inscribed on the marker is 67 years, 5 mos., 8 days. Temperance's will was dated Jan 11, 1856 in Warsaw, Benton, Mo. It was probated Mar 30, 1848. It is believed that she is buried in Vance Cemetery.
STEPHEN S. POTTER was born abt 1802 in Tn. His 1st wife was NARCISSUS ?(I feel her last name was Winegar because of the 1st son's name. There were Winegar's in the Jackson Co., Al. area & in Va. you find the Potter's & Winegar's had ties. But there are some that say her last name was Osborn but to date no one can give me any documented proof. And the person who came up with this name will not answer mailings on the question.) Narcissus was born abt 1806 and lists her birthplace in 2 different places - Ky. & Tn. Stephen & Narcisuss children were:

Stephen gave 10 acres of his land so that Ava, Mo. could be formed. Stephen enrolled in Douglas Co. into Capt Ford's Co. He served from May 22, 1865 to July 22, 1865. He had 4 son's that served in the Civil War for the Union as well; Hyram H., Wm. Riley, Josiah C. & David Winegar. During the war, men were allowed to go home every so often to get supplies and visit their families. While home on one of these visits, John Kirby, Mark Ritter & Hyram Potter were captured by a Confederate Regiment. They were called before a "drum-head court martial court". So called because a drum was used as a desk and the drumstick as a gavel. The Confederates decision was that they were Union spies. So they were sentenced to be shot. The 3 men thought this was just a scare tactic and considered it just a prank. The men were marched to a spot just west of where the lumber yard stands today in Ava. Three Confederate men were chose as the executioners. After the soldiers dismounted, they took their pistols and faced the prisoners and the Capt. gave orders to fire. John Kirby & Mark Ritter were killed by a gunshot thru their heart. Hyram, however knocked aside the pistol of the soldier who faced him and ran for the underbrush. With the Confederates pursuing him, he still made his escape, but there were several shots thru his clothing. He made it to the home of Capt. Jake Huffman and told the story. Capt. Huffman went to the home of his bugler and had him sound "Boots & Saddles". The call was relayed by conch shells and by blowing thru gun barrels. Within 30 min. a Union Regiment gathered at the execution site. On the first engagement 14 Confederates were killed. The battle became a running fight and one by one the Confederates were killed. During this time the wives and mothers buried their own dead in graves they dug themselves. The women hammered together rude coffins for their loved one. Narcissus died between 1860-66 in Ava, Douglas, Mo. Stephen then married Rebecca Biggs. Their children:
- Stephen Pickney b abt 1867 Douglas Co., Mo.; Buried Fordland Cemetery; M July 24, 1887 Ava, Douglas, Mo. Nancy J. Marler

David served in Co B 8th Regiment Mo State Militia Cav. Vol. David was in the Union Army from Dec 1861-Jan 1862. A few months after the Civil War was over, David remembered what the bushwhackers had done to his family. So he and Irwin King packed food and sleeping gear, saddled their horses and rode off. They returned i about a month and refused to tell anyone where they had been. Everyone figured they had went and looked up and killed the members of the bushwhackers. No one ever knew for sure and did not want to ask too many questions of them. One of the men they had taken revenge upon and did not kill said "He knew it was a Potter because he felt a ring on his hand and he recognized the ring as belonging to Potter." David and Elizabeth followed their son Josep Benjamin to Ok in the early 1900's. David died Feb 20, 1905 in Francis, Pontatoc, O.T. (Ok.). Elizabeth died Nov 8, 1904 also in Francis. According to their grandson they are both buried in Mission (Friendship) Cemetery at Sasakwa, Seminole, Ok. There graves have not been found.
JOSEPH BENJAMIN POTTER, SR. was born Mar 23, 1870 in Ava, Douglas, Mo. Sept 3, 1893 in Warsaw, Benton, Mo., he married ORA IRENE DENNIS. Ora was born Aug 18, 1872 in Boone Co., Mo. Ora had been married before to George A. Groshong. They had married Dec 25, 1889 in Warsaw, Benton, Mo. George was born abt 1862 to Wm. & Sarah F, Groshong. They lived together until Oct 10, 1891. Then Ora filed for divorce Apr 12, 1893 in Benton Co. But a change of venue moved the case to Hickory Co. May 10, 1893 Ora was awarded a divorce. I was told George was a lawyer and was a womanizer and that caused the divorce. But I have not found evidence that he was a lawyer. I did find that he was charged Apr 15, 1893 with breaking windows, destroying an orchard, broke a cart and stole a saddle. Makes me wonder if this was when he was served with divorce papers and whose property he destroyed. Joseph & Ora's children were:

Jan 3, 1918 Joseph was charged with arson during the "Green Corn Rebellion". This was when President Woodrow Wilson put into effect the Draft Act. Many were against the act and all races rebelled. The Frisco bridge at Sasakwa was set fire in 3 different places. W.T. Cargill , secretary of Friendship local of the W.C.U. named several prominent members, which included Ben & Earl Potter. Joseph died Apr 19, 1949 in Okmulgee, Ok. Ora died June 30, 1941 in Tulsa, Ok. They are both buried at Park Grove Cemetery in Broken Arrow, Ok.

The first proved ancestor is BENJAMIN G. CLANTON who married NANCY ?. There is speculation to this line: JAMES CLANTON moved to Il. with a brother Benjamin. This Benjamin did move to Il. during the same time frame. However, a Benjamin married Susannah Allgood in Surry Co., N.C. Is this the same Benjamin? Did Susannah die or did they divorce? Or is Susannah and Nancy one and the same? If these Benjamin's are the same person, then the ancestry is: (his parents) THOMAS CLANTON & SARAH MOORE (her father) JOHN MOORE); (his grandparents) BENJAMIN CLANTON & ELIZABETH; (his gr grandparents) THOMAS CLANTON & #1 ELIZABETH #2 LUCY COOK; (his gr gr grandparents) EDWARD CLANTON & SARAH EVANS. (I wish to thank Jim & Tom Goldrup who not only have tried to help me with the search on this line but have become long distance friends.) Benjamin's children:

Joseph was a Revolutionary soldier from Va. He filed for pension Aug 27, 1832 at the age of 72 in Clark Co., Ky. Joseph moved his family to Ky in the fall of 1784. Joseph was an upstanding citizen and his children must have dealt him a lot of embarrassment. The court records in Clark Co. show the Palmers were no strangers to the courts. In the book "The Early History of Winchester, Ky." and elderly citizen recalled "when I was a young boy there would be 3 or 4 fights on Battle Row every County Court day. Sam Richardson, the Collins and Palmers were bullies. They would get up a fight and retire to Battle Row. The men would form a ring around them that they might have fair play or fight. Then they would punch each other with their fists. But if either man was knocked down no one was allowed to touch him but let him get up. If he failed to get up the fight was over for that time." In Feb. 1833 Joseph Palmer, Jr. sued his brother, Thomas and Joel Collins (Thomas's son-in-law). Joseph, Jr. was suing for $1000 in damages. He claimed that Thomas & Joel had beaten him with a horse whip and had thrown rocks at him. In the counter charge Thomas claimed that Joseph, Jr. had told several people that Thomas's wife, Nancy was "a whore" and said "I pity Thomas for living with such a damned bitch" And that "Thomas had moved into a set of damned whores". (sorry this is all in the court records). Nancy asked for $2000 in damages. Joel Collins said Joseph, Jr. has said the same thing about his wife only worse. Joel said "In fact, Joseph said among other things, Betsey Collins is no better than her mother who is a whore." In Aug 1833, Joseph, Jr. was stabbed to death by Joel Collins. Thomas was one of the people charge in court as "Two people appearing in the state of nature chased another down the road making a lot of noise." James Palmer was sued by Radford McCargo for accusing Radford of stealing a hat. Suits like this just go on and on and on. Joseph died before Oct 1833. James enlisted in Capt Mastin Gore Corlews Co Mo State Guards for the CSA. May 2, 1862 the Columbia Statesman reported that James was in prison at Camp Todd for bridge burning. The account was told at the trial of James N. Lane: "My name is James N. Lane. I will be 21 years of age the 8th day of April next. I wish to make a frank and full explanation of my case in court. On the Fri before Christmas of Dec 1861, while I was at the home in my father's house about 6 mi NW of Columbia I was called on by Dr. Coleman - who then resided about 6 miles north of Columbia but I know not where he is now - who told me to get ready; they were going to scout for two or three days and that then they would come back...He did not tell me what they were going to do...The whole number that went that night was about 400 or 500. We started about 1 or 2 o'clock...We reached the railroad before daylight. They stopped a while before they began to tear it up but I had not hand in tearing it up...They began to tear it up at Sturgeon. They then burned the Strugeon bridge and another one pretty near to Centralia; after which we came back to the edge of the timber where we took breakfast and fed our horses and stayed about an hour. We were then attacked by Capt. Moss' Co I think. We all ran and I came home...Samuel Landon lives about half a mile from my father's. He is a carpenter and stone mason. He took active part in getting the persons to join Price's army. John McKinney, brother of Col. McKinney, was also along. I saw him with a sledge hammer knocking off the ties from the railroad, and I saw him knocking them off the end of the bridge. Harvey Palmer had a sledge hammer breaking up the ties and knocking them off the road. He lives about a mile and a half NE from my father....". James also served time in Gratiot Prison. He was captured Jan 2, 1865, put in prison Jan 27 and released June 9, 1865. At the time of his release he had taken an oath of allegiance. India died Mar 1, 1897 in Lebanon, Laclede, Mo. In 1604 John was a student at St John College at Oxford, England. Jan 29, 1619 he and his family left England on the ship George. He left with Gov. Sir George Yardley. John was to be a surgeon to the troop soldiers under the command of Sir John Harvey of England. The army soldiers were stationed at Middle settlement near Richmond, Va. Apr 1619 they landed in Va. John was active in the Indian wars in the colony. Apr 18, 1644 Dr. John Woodson was returning home from visiting a patient. At the sight of his home, Dr. Woodson was killed by Indians attacking his house. The house was barred and defended by John's wife, Sarah and a man named Ligon, who happened to be there at the time. The only weapon they had was an old time gun that Ligon used with deadly effect. At the first sight of the Indians, Sarah hid her 2 sons. One she put under a large wash tub and the other in a hole where they were accustomed to keep potatoes during the winter. For several generations descendants of these boys were called Tub Woodson & Tater Hole Woodson. At first fire Ligon killed 3 Indians, the 2nd shot he killed 2. In the meantime 2 Indians tried to come down the chimney. But Sarah scalded one of them to death with a pot of boiling water which was on the fire. She grabbed the iron roasting spit with both hands, hitting the other Indian in the head killing him instantly. The Indians outside became scared and started to run. But Ligon fired a 3rd time and killed 2 more Indians. Descendants that had the gun in their possession said "the gun is by exact measurement 7 ft. 6 in. in length and the barrel so large that I can easily put my whole thumb into it. When first made it was 8 ft. long but on account of some injury it was sent to England to be repaired and the gunsmith cut off 6 in. of the barrel." The gun is now on display at the Va. State Archives. Photos Relating to the Woodson Family.Sarah died Jan 17, 1660/61 in Henrico Co., Va. Her will was written Mar 22, 1740 and probated Dec 18, 1744 in Goochland Co., Va. They were both members of the Presbyterian Church. There is a tablet in their memory at the 1st Presbyterian Church in Greensboro, N.C. Their family did not think they had Bibles in the New World so they sent a Bible to Abraham and Suzanne. It is stored at the Library of Union Theological Seminary in Richmond, Va. When Suzanne was a young girl there was much persecution of Christians. In this Bible is written the accounts of her life during this time as she told her family. It reads: " In the reign of Louis the 14th during the religious persecution consequent to the Revocation of the Edict of Nantz lived Roche in the city of Sedan my great grandmother with father. He had three daughters the eldest about eighteen years old and I suppose was the customs had been examined three times, by the priest or government officials and her father fearing that she would be taken and put in a Catholic school sent her and his niece with her infant child to a seaport that they might embark for Holland. They were conducted by men dressed in womens clothes called night walkers. On the journey of crossing a small stream in the night at a mill the mother stumbled on some rocks and the child cried which aroused the soldiers stationed there. And then came out in the language of my grandmother nine lusty fellows and captured and carried them to prison. The father was permitted to take his daughter home but his niece was detained in prison and required to walk the streets every morning exposed to the ridicule and scoffs of the Catholics, as a penalty for her attempt to escape; her husband having gone on before to Holland, under the disguise of a ship carpenter. But our ancestor Roche, after paying a certain amount every year for the privilege of being permitted to live in peace, determined again to send his daughters to Holland. On the journey my great grandmother Susannah Roche the younger daughter of the three was taken very sick and they were obliged to carry her to a public house and while there she would frequently cough which would attract the attention of the soldiers and they would inquire if they had any huguenots. It was answered that they had a very sick person within and requested silence. Thence they went to Amsterdam and while there they were visited by their father who seeing his daughter's eat brown bread reproved them saying if it was a stone he would choose the whitest. The daughter's were using the cheap bread for economy, but their father objected to it. My great grandmother said she often cried as she ate it and remembered how spoiled she had been at home in France that she would not even eat the bread that had been broken and her mother would say that she wished that she her daughter might never see the day when she would be glad to get it. My great grandmother said that she while in her fathers house would of ten take white bread and exchange it with the poor for the brown but was greatly troubled when she thought that she had to eat it. Their father often visited them. Their mother also went to see them carrying money in her hair and purchased them silks and other fine dresses. The two sisters while residing in Holland would write to their parents and request them to send the little night cap they had left behind meaning their little sister fearing to mention her name as the letters were all examined. The eldest of the two sisters married and went to the West Indies. The younger Susannah Roche my great grandmother married and remained in Holland till they had five or six children. Susannah Roche was a lace maker in Holland and her husband Abraham Michaux a gauze weaver. Them came from Holland to Stafford Co., Va..." Suzanne Rochet "the Little Night Cap" was stowed away in a hogshead; which is a barrel that would hold 63 gallons. It was used to ship tobacco, liquors etc. In reference to the brown bread. Only the upper class people was allowed or able to eat the white bread. So it was an insult to Jean Rochet to see his daughter's eat brown bread.Photos Relating to the Michaux Family.
